About Me:
Hello!
My name is Emma Tink. I am a strong believer in fostering positive relationships with students. I believe that positive relationships between a student and teacher have a direct significant role in a students success. If a student ultimately does not have a good relationship with their teacher, specifically in the high school grades, the chances of them coming to class and paying attention drops significantly; this then results in lack of success in the classroom.
Students need a healthy relationship with their teacher. These are their role models out of the home, and for some, the only good role models they may have. Having a relationship builds trust. This is a crucial exterior lesson we teach students outside of curriculum.
One moment in particular stuck out during my PSII experience. I was teaching essay writing to my students, and one student in particular was having troubles with the topic and how to start his essay. I asked him about the topic which was respect. I asked him how this idea played a role in his life. He still had no thoughts or ideas. I knew I needed to think deeper and get him inspired. Then it hit me. I remembered from a previous assignment that he has a girlfriend. He talks about her a lot, and she seems too mean a great deal to him. I asked him if you need respect in a relationship and why. From there he told me how you can not have a healthy relationship without respect, which is ultimately true. I asked him if this idea was present in the novel we were reading. He brightened up and nodded. This experience made me feel like I was doing something right. Sometimes being a student teacher, you can feel a little like a fraud. You are not yet a real teacher, and you are still trying to figure it out, however a the same time, all these students expect answers that you may not have the answer for. This experience however made me feel like I actually taught him something and he took something away from our conversation. This experience even further taught me the importance of relationships. Without knowing this prior knowledge of my student, I would not have been able to inspire him with an idea or topic. However, knowing a little about him helped me help him.

My current reading selection
Every teacher knows that this job requires life-long learning. For myself, I am currently reading Because of a Teacher by George Couros in order to expand my knowledge in relational pedagogy.
